Learners gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace and will recognize their contribution in the prevention of fires and fire spread.
Objective
The Leaners will be able to:
1. Understand basic fire safety in the workplace
1.1 Identify the elements of the fire triangle
1.2 List the main causes of fires in the workplace
1.3 Outline the main costs of fires in the workplace for employers and employees
1.4 Outline the duties and responsibilities of employees in fire safety
1.5 Outline the duties and responsibilities of employers in fire safety
1.6 Outline the duties and responsibilities of fire wardens in fire safety
2. Understand the principles of prevention and control of fire in the workplace
2.1 Identify fire prevention measures that can be taken to minimise fire risks
2.2 Outline fire risk control measures
2.3 Identify different types of portable firefighting equipment and when they should be used
2.4 Outline simple checks for ensuring that fire safety equipment is safe to use
3. Understand actions to be taken in the event of a fire
3.1 State the actions to take in case of a fire in the workplace
3.2 State ways to contact the emergency services in the event of a fire in the workplace

1. Practical Observation –
This component involves the direct observation of learners as they carry out specific tasks or activities in a practical setting. Assessors evaluate performance against clearly defined criteria to ensure learners can demonstrate the required skills, competence, and application of knowledge in real or simulated work environments.
2. Centre-Marked Multiple-Choice Theory Assessment –
This written assessment tests the learner’s understanding of key concepts, principles, and knowledge areas relevant to the qualification. Learners answer multiple-choice questions, and the assessment is marked by the approved training centre following Highfield’s marking guidance.
To successfully complete the qualification, learners must achieve a pass in both the practical observation and the theory assessment. Failure to pass either component will result in an overall non-achievement of the qualification, ensuring that successful candidates demonstrate both practical competence and theoretical understanding.
